About Robert James Hacunda

Painting has always been my highest aspiration, and I have often found myself lost in the sensual, fluid quality of the medium. My work is a survival mechanism, a way to extravert an intense internal world seeking creativity and integrity. The study and observation of nature has always been an essential part of my life, affording me, as it has mankind, a transcendence. Of course, paintings must be painted, and for that one must be a humble worker.
My tendency is to change and transform: from style to style, color to color, motif to motif, so that each work tells its own story in its own words. This enables me to explore mysterious moods and imagery that seek to answer questions not necessarily asked. I paint as much from the mind as from the garden that might be right in front of me.
I often find myself afraid to work; afraid of the energy that I must be open to, afraid of the sensitivity of emotions, confusion and turmoil that come, afraid of the moods of the mind that reside deep inside. I am afraid until I can work with no effort or intent, and become a witness as much as any outside viewer. The brush takes my hand where it wants to, because it wants to. I sit back and listen to it beat out a rhythm on the canvas, like an ancient drum summoning the subconscious, with the hope that then the painting can speak for itself.
